Island Time Charters Hilton Head Island

Over 400 Turtle Nests on HHI!!

The Fall weather is rolling in, HHI is still as beautiful as ever and we have lots to celebrate this Fall. This was a record-setting year for sea turtles in South Carolina. There were 463 nests laid on the beautiful beaches of Hilton Head Island that led to 5,716 hatchlings beginning their journey from this place we call home. This is more than any other year on record for Hilton Head and we are so very excited!

The entire coast of South Carolina experienced their highest number of nests on record. The Department of Natural Resources reports that much of the increase is due to the conservation efforts and improved awareness.

This season was especially exciting with lots of firsts, including an extremely rare, and Hilton Head’s first EVER, Kemp Ridley! This was only the 4th Kemp Ridley nest ever recorded in the whole state of South Carolina. We also had two Green Turtles, AND a rare 2-headed sea turtle hatchling eloquently named, Squirt and Crush.

An extra special thank you to the Coastal Discovery Musuem, the Turtle Trackers, and the many volunteers that help make our island so hospitable for these amazing reptiles that have been a part of our geological fossil records for more than 200 million years!

Join us on one of our private charters! We offer Dolphin and Nature Cruises daily on the most comfortable boat in Hilton Head, allowing you to enjoy the landscape of the Low Country, engulfing yourself the beauty that Mother Nature has to offer.
